Burning Man Earth Guardians

  Volunteer - Burning Man Camp

Earth Guardians Pavilion and Camp

Each year we trying to think of green ways to stimulate the Burning Man community to appreciate the Black Rock environment, embrace LNT and greener practices in their own creative ways. We inspire, inform and encourage our fellow Black Rock City citizens to apply the Leave No Trace principles to life in our temporary desert home and to leave positive traces By focusing the community's tremendous artistic, technical and spiritual energy, we can go beyond ìno trace and leave positive traces on the land. Below are some of our ideas to make this happen.

  1. Include educational and inspirational environmental projects
  2. Reach out to Black Rock City video and radio PSAs, nightly wilderness movies and our Earth Party
  3. Build community through field-based nature education and hands-on environmental restoration,
  4. Make the EG camp comfortable, interesting, interactive, fun and full of activities and classes.
  5. Help ensure that Black Rock City meets permit requirements with hot springs , burn platform and MOOP patrols
  6. Work with specific artists on projects to inspire the burning man community to appreciate the desert environment.

Here is our site plan for this year (the site has changed slightly, but the frontage will be essentially the same)---------------->camp

Camp Guidelines

(For Earth Guardians camping in the village)

Before You Leave For the Playa

  • Read the BM Survival Guide:
  • Review LNT tips and techniques:
  • Last year’s EG afterburn report:
  • Review our volunteer teams and shift schedules
  • Read your email and ask questions, we will be sending out playa reports and last minute reminders from the playa .
  • Volunteer Committment! - Think about which volunteer teams you will be participating with! All campers must volunteer for at least one desk shift and one toxic avenger shift. !Other teams will need help as well!
  • Don't forget that as a camper you must also help with set-up or tear-down and daily maintenance of the public areas. Clean as You Go, Don't let it hit the ground!

When You Arrive

Find the Manager On Duty (MOD) (Loki(Mike), Tony, Jerry, Nancy, Hughbie or myself Lorax (Karina) . We’ll help you find your tent area, park your vehicle and give you a quick tour of the Earth Guardian space, etc. The MOD should be wearing a "How May I Help You" vest and their photo should be posted on the Manager on Duty Board.

  • Drink water, get settled, set up your camp, tie stuff down, get comfortable
  • Introduce yourself to others! Be aware that EGs' are sharing the space for the Friends of Black Rock and BLM exhibit, with BLM volunteers but we are all together on one campsite! Introduce yourselves - we in this together!
  • Drink more water, explore a bit, find the closest bathrooms, orient yourself on the city map,
  • Stop by the info desk and white board, check out our schedule of activities and volunteer teams

Once Settled, Pitch in

Help make our camp totally comfortable and clean. As LNT and Green educators in our community, we are expected to follow the basic LNT principles in operation of our camp.

  • Clean as You Go – Don’t Let it Hit the Ground
  • Everyone is expected to help wherever possible -- don't wait to be told what to do, just do it!
  • If you don't know what needs to be done ask someone else what you can do to help.
  • Help maintain and deMOOP the shared pavilion space after events (e.g. yoga, party, classes, etc) and each morning and evening.
  • Volunteer for the desk, toxic avengers, ecorestoration, hot spring monitors and MOOP patrol
  • Check out the What Where When and support EG pavilion events!

Kitchen

We’ll have a minimal camping kitchen for our camp – the potential for a mess is still high here. Let’s all do our best to keep it clean and usable for all!

  • Clean as You Go. Do not leave any food or dirty dishes in area after meals.
  • Please remove excess packaging on all food items before coming to Burning Man.Remember that you’ll probably not want to eat as much as at home.
  • Conserve water – all water used will have to be treated as grey water – the less we have to treat, the better!
  • Consider preparing and freezing meals for playa – saves your time and energy during the event. Just remember that if you do this and use the camp freezer to label your ziplock meals (all ziplocks look alike!).Be warned that unlabeled items may be considered open for use by anyone and/or tossed.
  • Share the space with others - Bring a cooler and keep most of your food in your cooler. Ice will be available for purchase in Center camp.
  • Please label your cooler if you’re planning on storing it in under the group shade.
  • Please sort out recyclables and wet/dry garbage in the labeled containers. Dry fruit rinds (orange, banana peels, etc) in a mesh bag before putting them into the composting. Everyone camping is expected to volunteer at least one day to help take recycling to recycling camp and fill our camp water containers (check with Jerry) located on the water bar.
  • We have a few group stoves available for use. If you do not want others to use your cookware, please keep them in your camping space. Please label your reusable cups/plates, etc.

Group Shower

  • Please conserve water. Wet down, soap, rinse – don’t leave the water running.
  • Use only hippy soap (Dr. Bronners) – works better with our treatment system
  • If you’re just washing hair, you might want to use a bowl to soak your hair – better for conditioning
  • There’s always shower in a box (wet ones) for a daily quick clean-up
  • Please limit showers on Sunday/Monday after the burn (we’ll probably take the shower down early to help reduce grey water). You can always grab a long shower at the truck stop in Sparks .

Never Leave Camp Deserted

(Veteran campers will probably volunteer to be at camp when the Man burns -- thanks!!)

  • Everyone signs up for desk shifts or crusaders - 3 hours shifts
  • Before your shift, talk with Nancy about what you should know to answer questions, read though the sign-up binder, check out the Black Rock Interpretive walk.
  • Always be ready to answer questions, make people happy, sign volunteers up, have fun, stay hydrated (desk volunteers get special treats!).

If you do decide to leave camp (even though it’s so comfy) - Make sure all your belongings are secure (from wind, rain, dust) - Wear something fun, carry a MOOP bag and a cup - Smile - talk to others, have fun, participate!

In any major weather event (Wind storms, rain) Return back to camp if you can, make sure everything is covered & buckled down Grab your goggles, dust mask or scarf – seek shelter

Everyone is responsible for their own belongings

  • Lock up valuables! (esp. bikes, tents, etc) or put then into your car.
  • If you borrow anything, please return it when promised (in real time, not playa time)
  • Leave extra space in your car for the ride home. Stuff tends to expand on the playa. If you remove packaging, bring only recyclable cans and plan simple meals, you should be able to make it through the week with only one bag of trash to take home.
